Bella Italia – a Coeliac UK accredited chain

Bella Italia is a restaurant chain in the UK that has been operating for 25 years.

They are accredited by Coeliac UK and there is a separate preparation area for the gluten free meals and your meal comes with a sticker to show it is gluten free. You can read more about how gluten free orders are handled here.

With over 70 locations you can find them in central London, major cities around the UK (eg Manchester, Liverpool, Oxford, York), Luton airport and some Centreparcs.

The menu

Bella Italia’s gluten free menu is two pages, so there is plenty to choose from, whatever your appetite or taste. Other dietary requirements are also marked up, such as dairy free or vegan.

Check the ‘offers’ section on the website as there are deals such as 40% off mains or kids to eat free. Also look out for the seasonal Christmas menu from October if you are organising a Christmas party.

The mozarella carrozzo is a lovely starter, which is lightly crumbed mozarella parcels with baby vine tomatoes and a spicy tomato dip.  Although on my gluten free menu, this dish did not come up as gluten free online when I checked whilst writing this post. It definitely said gluten free on the receipt, so it is probably just an online anomaly.

Olives are always a starter option and there is a gluten free option for flat breads. As I love elderflower, I could also not go past the elderflower fizz mocktail which contains elderflower cordial, cucumber and soda.

I chose pasta dishes, as that was what I was in the mood for (on two separate visits!). The menu also has a good range of gluten free pizza, risotto, salads and meat and fish.

Below is the ‘Capra’ (vegetarian tomato and pepper sauce with goats cheese) and the ‘Cache e pepe’ (chicken and pancetta). I enjoyed both and really liked having the rocket topping. You can see the stickers on the right hand side showing they are gluten free dishes.

The warmed chocolate brownie is a rich but delicious dessert, with the ice cream being a refreshing addition.

The meals featured here were from the Manchester and Blackpool branches of Bella Italia, but you can find one near you on their website.
