Beyond Bread is a 100% gluten free bakery that burst onto the London gluten free scene to a lot of fanfare in early 2015. It has continued to wow coeliacs with their tasty baguettes, sandwiches, cakes and pastries.
If you are working in or visiting central London, you must visit Beyond Bread in Fitzrovia! They are open for breakfast, lunch and morning / afternoon tea, 7 days a week with eat in or takeaway options. It is a modern looking cafe, with their distinct yellow branding thoughout.
My first visit was at breakfast time and we enjoyed toasted sandwiches which range from around £4-5 depending on fillings and whether eating in or out.
You could have had ‘morning after scrambled eggs’ on a soft bun, but there were several options for sandwiches such as:
- ham & cheese with honey mustard dressing
- smoked salmon with lemon cream cheese with dill and gherkin
- roast veg, buffalo mozzarella and home made dairy & nut free pesto
- tuna & mozzarella melt
- thyme roasted portobello mushrooms and taleggio cheese
I thought the bread was absolutely delicious, but my gluten eating husband has never been a fan of gluten free bread and still thought that the bread tasted gluten free (but good for gluten free!).
One day I visited on a Sunday and there were brunch specials, such as poached eggs or avocado on toast with chilli and lime dressing.
There are also a large number of cakes and pastries ready for breakfast and available all day. You will find items that are really difficult to find gluten free such as scones, danishes and tartlets as well as muffins and cakes. For seasonal variety you will find options like gingerbread men at Christmas time and hot cross buns at Easter.
For lunch you have the luxury of gluten free baguettes (ranging from £5-6), but there are also a large variety of salads, quiche and interesting options such as a vegetarian sweet potato burger.
- roast beef with black olive tapenade and sundried tomatoes (pictured below)
- prosciutto, minted goats’ cheese and tomato chilli jam
- chicken and roast peppers with home made dairy & nut free pesto
- grilled halloumi, harissa hummus and red peppers
- chicken with creamy ricotta dressing and rocket
Having a baguette for lunch is one of the main things I miss since being diagnosed with coeliac disease. For me, the joy of being able to sit down and have a baguette for a quick lunch while out and about is indescribable. Only a coeliac would understand!
I have seen other people comment that the bread is so good even gluten eaters would not know the difference, but I could still tell the baguette was gluten free (but not the toasted sandwich). That being said, I think this is probably as good as it gets and would be happy to eat one regularly!
If you are like me, lunch has to be followed by a cake if you are in a 100% gluten free bakery. I chose the vanilla and rose cupcake, but found it was a bit dense and was disappointed the icing wasn’t sweet, but had a bitter cheesy taste. I scraped it off and had choice regret as there were so many other amazing looking creations that will have to wait until next time!
You can also get coffee and tea and a small selection of cold drinks/juices to have with your meal.
The bakery is located downstairs so there are a number of fresh loaves of bread available (priced around £4) for you to take home, but the baguettes aren’t usually available until around 11.30 am.
There is both inside and outside seating. There is a table for four outside, and several tables indoors including a bench at the window, some small tables and a big round table at the back that probably seats around five people. You would not feel uncomfortable going there on your own. When I have visited they had chilled music playing and it was a nice relaxing atmosphere. Do note however, that there is no toilet available to the public.
If you are wanting to sing the joys of Beyond Bread, you can buy a t-shirt or a tote bag (£5) proclaiming ‘gluten free is the new black’!
Beyond Bread is also featured on my 100% gluten free London post. It is located in Fitzrovia, a central London area north of Oxford Street and Soho, between Marylebone and Bloomsbury. The closest tube station is Goodge Street on the Northern Line.
