Cafe Free – Mosman, Sydney gluten free

Sydney gluten free, MosmanCafé Free is based in Mosman, a lower north shore suburb of Sydney, which is around a half hour bus trip from the city centre.

Their philosophy is to have something for everyone, but specifically cater for people with coeliac disease, gluten and lactose intolerance.  If you don’t have any intolerances, you will still enjoy the menu, with ‘normal’ bread available (bread being the sticking point for most people who are not gluten free).

Everything that is made in house is gluten free, with most items also being lactose free.  There is no wheat based flour on site which reduces cross contamination risk.

We visited for brunch and I chose the quesilladas with eggplant (aubergine for the Brits) but you could also have them with beef.  They had a lovely flavour on their own but was delicious combined with the three sides of avocado, sour creme and salsa!

When I was looking at the menu online, I was sure my husband would choose the breakfast pizza as it would combine two of his favourite meals, but apparently it was too early for pizza!  He had scrambled eggs on sourdough (not gluten free) with bacon and a potato rosti (which is gluten free) and was very happy with his meal.

The menu changes seasonally and has a mixture of breakfast options, hot meals and salads, as well as ‘little meals’ all day which would be good for kids or if you just don’t feel like much.  Next time, I will try the cinnamon toast 🙂

There is also a good selection of cakes on display if you are after coffee and cake.

One of the other very exciting features of Cafe Free is that they are dog friendly!  When we were there a dog was in the cafe at a table just inside the door on a bed supplied by the cafe and a jar of dog biscuits was on the counter. There is also an outside bench area if you prefer to sit outside in the sun with your four legged friend.

We were visiting from Melbourne and found it very easy to get there by bus and there is a stop just a few metres from the cafe.  We got the 244 bus from Wynyard station which took around 30 minutes on a Saturday morning and it was well worth the trip for a safe and delicious meal.

After brunch we had a little walk around Mosman and found a view over the bay which was beautiful on a sunny winter’s day.

*Jan 2017 update:  this Mosman location has closed and they will be relocating – stay tuned!*
