Fox in the Box – allergy friendly cafe in Melbourne

By on April 1, 2020 in 100% GF Reviews, Melbourne with 0 Comments

Fox in the Box is an allergy friendly cafe in Melbourne which is a lifesaver for those on restrictive diets. It is 100% gluten free and low FODMAP as well as being largely dairy free.

Located near Gardenvale station in Brighton, the café is run by ‘the intolerant chef’ – a chef who needs to eat gluten free and also has lactose and fructose malabsorption.

The menu

Everything is gluten free, onion, garlic and leek free and FODMAP safe. The menu is marked up for dairy free, soy free, lactose free and vegetarian.

There is a daytime and a dinner menu with a lot of choice – such as sandwiches, salads, pasta, burger, chicken parmigiana etc.  There is also a small children’s menu as well as a dessert menu. You can see the full range of options on the website.

You may be wondering where the flavour comes from when no onion or garlic is used in the cooking?  Other methods are used to provide flavour such as a mustard sauce with the parmigiana and optional chilli with a pasta sauce. The pièce de résistance is an amazing spice that gives and onion and garlic flavour – more on this later!

The meals

Favourites like chicken parmigiana and a BLT sandwich are on the menu. My non GF husband really enjoyed the parma.

The salads have also been big winners. The rare beef salad with ‘mock onion’ was divine and my dad thought the calamari salad was very tasty and a good size for lunch.

Dessert and cake

I have popped in to Fox in the box just for afternoon tea as they have a cabinet with sweet treats. The vanilla slices are from Gluten Free 4U and they stock my favourite style (dairy and egg free) as well as more traditional ones. Other options include scones, a chocolate brownie and dessert menu items such as creme brûlée or chocolate pudding.

You can buy the spice that gives and onion and garlic flavour which I thought was superb in my beef salad. I bought some and look forward to experimenting with this as I love the flavour of onion but it doesn’t always agree with me.

I have only Fox in the Box visited at lunchtime so far and look forward to trying the dinner menu. You can also enjoy a glass of wine as it is licensed.  Take home meals are also available and currently due to COVID-19, all menu items are available for takeaway. They are also baking a white loaf for sale.
