Gluten free cakes by Gilbert & Marcel

Gluten free, dairy free, egg free and nut free cake in Melbourne

Gilbert & Marcel fill a gap in the gluten free market, which is being able to buy a delicious gluten free cake or slice from a supermarket.  You can easily serve these as a dessert or afternoon tea to gluten eaters and they will be none the wiser!

They are produced in a dedicated gluten free kitchen and products are also dairy, nut and egg free, so you can cover a lot of dietary requirements in one hit!

They are stocked in the smaller supermarkets around Melbourne, such as IGA, Leo’s and Jeffries.  I buy them at Leo’s in Hartwell (Camberwell) and Boccaccio Supa IGA in Kew (opposite Gluten Free 4 U).

There is a huge variety of sizes and flavours, from cupcakes and slices to large round cakes and slabs to cut to your preferred size. In the photo below, you can see some of the range.

Leo's supermarket Camberwell

If you do go to Leo’s in Hartwell, the cakes are at the front of the store (just past the fruit and vegetables), and the slices are at the back of the store at the end of the bread aisle.

Two flavours have quickly became firm favourites in our household: the Apple Crumble Cake and Salted Caramel Brownies.  The Apple Crumble Cake comes in a large round cake (serves 8, around $11) or in cupcakes (serves 6, around $7)

I buy the Salted Caramel Brownie as two slices.  As you would expect, it is quite rich, and you might think you won’t be able to eat it all, but it is so delicious you inevitably will eat the lot!  There is also a Triple Chocolate Brownie option.

I have also enjoyed the Chocolate Gateaux and Raspberry Friand.

  • Raspberry Baked Cheesecake, Blueberry Baked Cheesecake and Classic Baked Cheesecake
  • Passionfruit Sponge Cake
  • Banana Cake
  • Coffee Streusal Cake
  • Raspberry and Almond Cake
  • Lemon Curd Tart
  • Also look out for mince tarts and mini Christmas puddings during the festive season.

These cakes are top quality and you would never know they are suitable for so many dietary requirements, so give them a go!  If you have a special occasion coming up, you can contact them about custom order cakes.
