Gluten free at the North Melbourne Hotel

Gluten free at the North Melbourne Hotel

Most of the menu at the North Melbourne Hotel is gluten free and coeliacs get very excited seeing an Instagram post like the one below!

Having visited twice, I can say that the food is a-mazing and recommend you try it it out, however you better get in quick as a notice went out yesterday (10 Aug 2018) that the owners have decided to sell.

I was expecting a traditional Melbourne pub, however it couldn’t be further from this.  On entry there is a lovely bar area with Chesterfield sofas.  The restaurant area is decorated in a very ornate Mediterranean style – a huge naked man marble statue is not something you see every day!

Gluten free menu

The menu is quite extensive and you can have small bites or a main meal.  Gluten free is clearly marked up and most items are gluten free. They only use gluten free flour in the kitchen which means the fryers are also gluten free but they do have normal bread (for the side dish of bread and crostini and croutons etc) as well as normal pasta (the gluten free pasta is by Ador Gluten free).  You can see photos of the menu on Zomato which is also marked up for vegans and vegetarians

To start we shared a few entrees of the calamari, sweet potato and zucchini (courgette) chips and the  jalapeño popper filled with cream cheese and wrapped in pancetta.  They were all great, but the chips were divine!   Gluten free bread was provided without extra charge.

Main courses

On my first visit I had fried chicken with slaw which was absolutely delicious.  My husband enjoyed his steak and chips – the steak was cooked as ordered and had crispy shoestring fries as a side order.  There were certainly enough fries to share.

On my second visit I tried the half roasted chicken with avocado and tomato salad which had great flavours.  My friends had seafood pasta (pictured with non GF pasta) and the meatballs with salad. Everyone loved their meals.

This is where things become really special as every dessert (all six) are gluten free! No fruit salad here – instead you can indulge in churros 🙂  Oh my God, they were absolutely heavenly and you should go to  just for these!

My friends and I all thought the food was fabulous and I thoroughly recommend a visit to The North Melbourne Hotel.  My husband and I spent $125 on starters, meat mains, sides and drinks. There only appeared to be one staff member organising drinks and food, but the service was good.

The hotel is located just out of the city centre and is only around a 10 minute walk from the Queen Victoria Market.  If you are on public transport, there is a tram stop at the door and is only three stops from Melbourne Central station on the number 57 tram or two stops from Flagstaff station on the number 58 tram.  Parking is available in nearby side streets but you may have to hunt for a park.
