Gluten free cream tea in Torquay & Brixham
No visit to Devon (or Cornwall) would be complete without a cream tea. There are arguments amongst the West Country folk about who invented it first (much like the pavlova argument between Australia and New Zealand), but it doesn’t matter who came up with the idea as long as it is gluten free!
As an Australian in the UK, I’m always self-conscious about how I pronounce ‘scone’ – in Australia it always rhymes with ‘con’, but in the UK it often sounds rather posh by rhyming with ‘cone’. No one batted an eyelid at my pronunciation in Devon (or corrected me), so I felt right at home. (I also found this in York, maybe the posh pronunciation is a London thing?)
At the Singing Kettle in Torquay*, they make the gluten free scones in a heart shape so there is never any confusion – what a great idea! It is this sort of concept that inspired me to call my blog ‘The Coeliac Plate’ – in Las Vegas I was given a different plate to the ‘normal’ meals to indicate my meal was gluten free.
When I asked if the scones were toasted/warmed, the answer was straight away “we know about cross contamination and are very careful”. Music to a coeliac’s ears! The scones were served warm and were a lovely afternoon tea. The café is also dog friendly (inside and out), so the pooch doesn’t have to miss out on the festivities.
The only thing they need to improve is their spelling! I saw ‘gluten’ spelt as ‘gluton’ several times while we were away on boards and menus.
*check Tripadvisor as the website is no longer working although they seem to still be trading.
