Hella Good – Melbourne gluten free souvlaki

Hella Good is a souvlaki takeaway shop that is owned by the good folk at the iconic Greek restaurant, Stalactites, in Melbourne CBD, with both stores having Coeliac Australia accreditation.

Hella Good is on Elizabeth Street, almost opposite Flinders Street station. They have many gluten free options available, including a gluten free (and vegan) pita for the souvlaki, chips, salad and dips.

The menu is available online if you want more detail, but you have the usual souvlaki options of lamb or chicken or both (with pita or naked), hot chips, pita with dips and greek salad.

I chose the lamb souvlaki combo that comes with a small chips and drink, which is $18 plus $2 extra for the gluten free pita. I absolutely loved having a souvlaki  – the pita is soft and holds together, melt in your mouth lamb with toppings of tzatziki, lettuce and tomato. The chips also had a lovely seasoning.  Don’t forget to grab some serviettes as it becomes a bit messy to eat!

The tzatziki and hommus are the gluten free dips available and the Greek salad is also gluten free.  Note: the two desserts available are not gluten free.

The store is primarily for takeaway, but there is a bench with around six seats if you want to eat in.  Delivery is available to surrounding areas on Uber Eats, Deliveroo and Menulog.

They are open really late at night, so if you have had a few drinks and all your friends are getting to KFC or McDonalds, you no longer have to sit and watch them eat seeing you can now go and grab a souvlaki!

If you are going to be a regular, don’t forget to get a loyalty card to get a free chips and free combo.

There are a lot of very happy coeliacs in Melbourne now that Hella Good offers a yummy takeaway option. If you are after a sit down meal, head over to Stalactites, which is on the other side of the city on Londsdale Street.
