Hemp Kitchen – 100% gluten free St Kilda

Hemp Kitchen in St Kilda is a modern eatery with an Italian twist. As the name suggests, hemp flour is at its heart. Everyone’s first reaction is a joke about getting high, but there is a difference between hemp and marijuana (you can read more about this on their website).

Hemp is naturally gluten free and quite nutritious, being a good vegetarian protein source with and vitamins and minerals and omega 3 and 6 fatty acids.

Hemp Kitchen is Coeliac Australia accredited and one of the many great venues on the 100% gluten free Melbourne listing with an all gluten free food menu and gluten free beer is available.

Located near to popular Acland Street, there is a large menu to choose from, with vegetarian and dairy free options clearly marked. See the full menu on their website.

Starters

There are a number of entrees to choose from, including several focaccias. The garlic one below was delicious but I would call it a pizza rather than a focaccia due to it being flat.  It has 8 slices, so only order if you have enough people to eat it (our table of five managed to demolish it).

The smoked arancini balls were also delicious.

Pizza

Pizza is one of the things I think most coeliacs visit Hemp Kitchen for as it is so hard to get a gluten free pizza free from cross contamination.

I was the only one needing gluten free and the ‘normal’ eaters wouldn’t have known that the pizza was gluten free – this is a great endorsement!   I think the hemp flour gives the base a nice full and nutty taste.

The pizzas above are: Positano with ham, eggplant and cherry tomatoes (top left), Vittoria with hot salami, goat cheese, red onions and cherry tomatoes (top right), Capricciosa with ham, mozzarella, artichoke and mushrooms (bottom left).   Below is the smoked salmon and avocado pizza and the Diavola in the background.

The average price of a pizza is $24 but can go to $32 depending on toppings.

Pasta

The pasta is all freshly hand made and also tastes great.

Other mains

One of our party choose the starter of slow cooked lamb with a side of hand cut chips as her meal and thought it was delicious (NB this is no longer on the menu). I tried a chip and they were yum!

Dessert

I haven’t had the opportunity to try dessert yet, but the nutella pizza has got my name on it! Also on the menu is cake, hemp cannoli and affogato.

Brunch

Weekend brunch has a variety options, from toast, granola, eggs, fritters and pancakes to burgers.  Below is the scrambled eggs on toast with extra avocado and the grilled vegetable burger (which is served with chips).

Freshly squeezed juices and granola with plenty of fruit is also a great breakfast choice.

Gluten free beer and drinks menu

Wilde gluten free beer is available which is an Australian beer made from Sorghum.  NB: non gluten free beers are also sold, including hemp beer on tap.  There is a good wine and spirits list as well as the usual teas and coffees (nut and hemp milk options), fresh juices and kombucha.  Hot chocolate isn’t listed on the menu, but they have it!

Bakery products

These can be purchased to use at home, such as hemp bread, pasta, pre-baked pizza base and muffins.

I have visited several times and the restaurant has not been very busy, so I encourage you to give them a go and support the businesses that support people with coeliac disease! They like to have bookings, which you can do via their website.

They also have a small court yard area at the front where you can sit in the sun and have your dog with you (some dog food is also on the menu!).

If you can’t visit, they deliver via Deliveroo.  You can also hire the restaurant for functions.
