MOM Cafe – 100% gluten free Prahran

Market on Malvern (MOM) is based on a food as medicine concept, where the food is designed to nourish your body.   This Prahran cafe is entirely gluten free and all ingredients are checked for traces of gluten.

MOM cafe is a place where dietary and digestive needs are not only understood, but are at the forefront of the menu design which is created by their team of dietitians, naturopaths and chefs.   Eating out can be difficult with dietary requirements and some of the trickier ones, such as low FODMAP and yeast free, are catered for here.  If you have other specific requirements (e.g. GAPS) meals can be adjusted as necessary. A lot of care is taken in the preparation of the meals and even filtered water is used for all cooking.

These options are marked on the menu:

gf (gluten free) df (dairy free) v (vegetarian) yf (yeast free) ff (fructose free)

The wide variety of options caters for different food preferences or tastes in your family or friend group.  Importantly, there has been no sacrifice in taste!  There are also several kid friendly meals on the menu.

Breakfast and brunch menu

It is hard to choose a meal as there are so many delicious sounding options.

All day breakfast style options include egg dishes, pancakes (red velvet pancakes and pumpkin and coconut pancakes have been on the menu), healthy bowls, gluten free porridge and smashed avocado on toast.

From a recent visit in September 2018, I have absolutely love the chilli scrambled eggs and the Japanese pancake (Okonomiyaki).

If you want something a bit more traditional, you can have scrambled eggs on a bagel or toast or for something sweeter, try the acai bowl – how pretty does that look?!

Lunch options include several fabulous bagels, warm meals and salads.

The roast chicken bagel is combined with kale pesto, raw slaw and creamy cider dressing and all these flavours made for a delicious lunch. The bagels are from Pure Gluten Free Bakery, which happen to be my favourite gluten free bagels.

The vegetable green curry (with added chicken) was a feast for the eyes as well as the stomach – it was fragrant and creamy (but dairy free) and you can see from the picture that it was a generous serving size with a great variety of nutritious vegetables.  (NB This is not on the current menu.)

The drinks

I love fresh juice and the juices are cold pressed each day. There is a great variety of drinks, including smoothies (fodmap friendly), coffee and teas, kombucha and more.  I loved the pink grapefruit sparkling mineral water, but be warned it has more sugar than Coke!

The cafe environment is quiet and relaxing, with mostly tables of two.  There is a courtyard space at the rear of the building which would be an ideal spot for a larger group or to relax on a warm day. You can also pop in to take-away coffee and cake, or a pre-prepared meal for your dinner at home.

The cafe was founded by Dr Anthony Yeuong, who owns the Beingwell Healthcare Clinic in the same building and staff are available to answer health questions and discuss your needs.

I have visited several times and could not fault the food and would highly recommend you put MOM onto your ‘must visit’ list.

Disclosure:  Two of my visits (2017 & 2018) were ‘on the house’ but this has in no way influenced my review.
