Nibsy’s gluten free in Reading
Nibsy’s is a 100% gluten free café in Reading, a busy shopping and business area in Berkshire. How amazing it is to visit somewhere and not have to ask a million questions or worry about cross contamination!
Nibsy’s opened in September 2014 and was very busy when I visited on a Saturday lunchtime in October. Not surprisingly, it was opened by a lady (Naomi Stoker) who is gluten intolerant herself.
The café is set up for both ‘grab & go’ lunches and for eating in. The offering is sandwiches (can be toasted), wraps, quiche, cakes and biscuits, as well as seasonal items (eg pies, soups, smoothies).
At the left hand counter you will find the drinks and pre-made sandwiches and wraps (see below, a little bit empty after the lunchtime rush).
The main counter has a very tempting array of cakes and biscuits.
You can grab a pre-packed bag from the fridge section and order any other items at the counter. You are given a table number and the meal is brought to your table. There is plenty of seating at ground level, outside and downstairs in the basement. There is an eclectic mix of high and low tables, chairs and sofas. There is also free wifi.
My husband and I both chose the ham and cheese toastie, which we both really enjoyed (my husband doesn’t normally particularly like gluten free bread). We shared a vegetable quiche and it was superb – great flavours and a good sized serving. I’m not sure if you can order a side salad, but I would do so next time if it is an option.
We couldn’t resist the amazing looking cakes, and I chose the coffee and walnut. If you like the M&S coffee and walnut cake (my current favourite), you will love this cake!
My husband loved the orange & almond cake, which he said was very moist.
The coffee is locally roasted in Winchester and apparently is award winning (I don’t drink coffee, so didn’t try it!). I was kicking myself after I left, as I did not think to order a hot chocolate – something I miss a lot since being diagnosed due to most mixes having barley malt in them.
Overall, we had a great experience at Nibsy’s and it is a shame I don’t live closer to Reading to visit more often! You can see some of the other items available on their Facebook page.
