Nutie gluten free donuts and brunch in Sydney
Nutie donuts is a revelation for a coeliac as the entire store is gluten free. From reading background on the store, the owner wanted to make treats that her coeliac friends could eat as she could see them missing out. We all need friends like this!
This review is of the Balmain store, but another shop has opened in Surry Hills in 2019. Balmain is a cinch to get to as it is just a short bus ride from the city and you can get dropped off a short walk from Nutie. You are guided to the shop by the massive blow up donut out the front. A bit further away is the ferry wharf which we wondered down to for the scenic trip back to the city.
There is a wide choice of donut flavours every day as well as a variety of cakes. If you are vegan or dairy free, there are also a number of options for you. You can get your tastebuds salivating by looking at their Facebook page.
Everything is hand made and both the cakes and donuts are like works of art. All Nutie donuts are cake donuts made with almond meal and almond milk and are baked, not fried.
Your donuts are laid out in a box with a card saying ‘abs are great but have you tried donuts?’
I started with the chocolate donut which was just like a little chocolate cake with sprinkles. I hadn’t initially realised that the donuts were not fried, so was a little bit surprised by the cake consistency which you can see in the photos below. As they are not light and fluffy like a traditional donut, I couldn’t eat two in one session (which I would easily be able to do with a traditional donut!)
I took the vanilla cinnamon one back to the hotel and enjoyed it the next day, warmed a little in the microwave.
If you want to eat your donuts straight away, there is some seating out the front and down the side of the shop. Bear in mind the seating is effectively outside which is fine most of the time in Sydney, but would be a bit nippy in winter.
The cake options include a variety of cheesecakes, various slices, s’mores, vegan rocky road and the vegan wagon wheel looks amazing (on the list for next time). They also recreate Aussie classics like lamingtons and vegan iced vovos. Nutie do custom orders for special occasions such as a large donut cake, cheesecake or stacked donut cake (you can see examples on their Facebook page or on Food By Us).
There are also a couple of savoury options and on Facebook I have seen delicious looking loaded vegan Nachos. The Surry Hills store has a menu with breakfast and light lunches.
Keep an eye out for Nutie in other locations – for example at Finders Keepers Market (Sydney) and the Sydney Royal Easter Show. You can also order packs for delivery via Food By Us.
