Otway Artisan GF bakery and cafe – Great Ocean Road gluten free

Great Ocean Road gluten free

Otway Artisan is a gluten free bakehouse making handmade gluten free breads with no preservatives.  You can find their products around Victoria, but they also have a cafe in Birregurra, a small town on the Otway Harvest Trail.

I realise I was one of the uninitiated, as everyone I spoke to had heard of Birregurra because of the fine dining restaurant Brae.  If you are not familiar with the area, Birregurra is between Colac and Winchelsea and is 30 minutes drive from Lorne (on the Great Ocean Road route) or on the Melbourne to Warrnambool route if driving inland.

The bakery and cafe are 100% gluten free, run by local couple Justin and Bozena.  Housed in a lovely old bank building in the main street, it is filled with character.

Gluten free bakery products

I had already enjoyed the bread from Otway Artisan through local stockists in Melbourne and Lorne. The baguettes are fluffy on the inside and crusty on the outside which is a ‘normal bread’ texture that is difficult to achieve with gluten free bread.  The pizza bases are also great.  These products are both gluten and dairy free.

To be sure you don’t miss out on what you want, it is best to order in advance but you should be able to get panini, Turkish bread and pizza bases as well as some other products, including small loaves on the weekend.

For when you are back at home, stockists around Melbourne include:

Leo’s Fine Food and Wine – Hartwell & Kew
Gluten Free Foods – Mornington
McCoppins – Clifton Hill
Beaumaris IGA –  Beaumaris
Di Censo – Doncaster

Boundy’s IGA – Essendon

Or order for delivery via hello@otwayartisanglutenfree.com.au with a $10 delivery charge for Victoria and $15 for interstate.

Gluten free cafe

You can eat in at the good sized table inside or at the two tables on the front footpath or grab and go a sandwich or coffee and cake.

There is a light lunch menu to choose from, which includes a really good variety of filled baguettes (both veggie and meat), bruschetta, salad roll, grazing plate for two and pizza.  The menu does change from time to time.

For those in a hurry, a small selection of filled baguettes are on display on the front counter.

I chose the ham and brie baguette for a takeaway lunch to eat in the car on the road and it was fantastic!  While I was waiting for my baguette to be toasted I was chatting to a local lady who said her non gluten free children love the bread and they buy it regularly.  That is high praise indeed, as ‘normal’ people don’t usually like gluten free bread.

There is also a nice selection of gluten free cakes available. You will find old favourites such as carrot cake, as well as more exotic options like lemon and lavender cake.

The cakes are marked up with other allergens such as dairy and nuts.  Please note that the cakes are not made on the premises, but by a local cake maker who does have stringent cross contamination procedures but not a 100% gluten free kitchen.

For Great Ocean Road gluten free, Otway Artisan is a must visit (worth a diversion if you are nearby) and also look out for their bread products around Victoria.
