Primo Pizza – gluten free in Northcote

Primo Pizza have been accredited by Coeliac Australia, so you can now have gluten free pizza in Northcote, seven evenings a week. They are virtually opposite the Westgarth Palace Cinema, so an ideal place for a meal before or after a movie.

We went on a Saturday night and it was fully booked, so bookings are recommended.  You can also takeaway or have your meal delivered if you are a local.

The menu

The menu has a good selection of options, including meat, vegetarian and vegan. The menu is available online and items marked with an asterisk can be made gluten free, which I would say is around 80% of the menu.

As is usually the case, there is a surcharge for gluten free – pasta or gnocchi is an extra $3 and pizza is an extra $4.

The pizza

Below is the Terra Bene pizza on a gluten free base. It is hard to see under all the rocket, but the topping was eggplant puree, swiss mushroom, cherry tomatoes and pesto.  It is one of their vegan options and I thought it was delicious.

My dining partners chose the Guiseppe (on the left) and the Lamborghini (on the right). I love the fun pizza names and the the latter got its name from the 12-hour slow cooked lamb and just like a good roast, has garlic and onion, lemon & rosemary as well as typical pizza additions of mozzarella, goats cheese and olives.

The Guiseppe had more traditional pizza toppings with tomato, Italian sausage, salami, artichoke and mushrooms. This was their favourite of the two and both are available on a gluten free base.

There are three dessert options, which are not gluten free. You are unlikely to still be hungry after the pizza though!

Getting there

Parking is on the street (and can be very busy due to the cinema). If you are not driving, it is close to Westgarth station, on the 86 tram route and also served by numerous buses.

Definitely give Primo a go if you are after a delicious gluten free pizza in Northcote!
