Duke of Brunswick – 100% gluten free pub in Adelaide

100% gluten free in Adelaide

The Duke of Brunswick, a 100% gluten free pub in Adelaide CBD was one of the highlights of my trip to Adelaide! The have a big menu and lots of pub favourites that are often off limits when you have coeliac disease.

If you have any allergies, an allergy matrix is available on request. The menu notes that nuts are not used in the kitchen but they cannot guarantee there are no traces.

It is affectionately known as ‘the DOB’.

I would go again just for the cheesy garlic bread, so delicious!

Another favourite of mine pre-diagnosis was deep fried camembert with cranberry sauce and once again the DOB delivered! My husband really enjoyed the pork and spring onion dumplings (available in serves of 6 or 12).

Main meals

You can see we sampled a lot of pub favourites – fish & chips, a hot dog (with the extras of cheese bacon, onion and jalepeno), a cheeseburger and steak and chips. Everyone loved enjoyed the meals and you can see that the serves are very generous.

If you prefer, you can swap out the fries for sweet potato fries or potato salad for $4.

There are some healthier options too, with pan fried fish and salads. I really enjoyed the nut free tofu satay served on rice, along with a garnish salad (additional $2).

Pizza is also on the menu Friday to Monday nights from 5pm, eat in or takeaway.

For the kids under 12, there is crumbed chicken, battered fish or a hot dog and two desserts.

There is a whole page of dessert options, including sticky date brownie, waffles, tirasmisu cheesecake and a great cheese platter including the deep fried camembert above, but sadly we didn’t have any room left!

You can see the full menu and prices on their website.

They have gluten free beers (also on tap) from breweries such as TwøBays, O’Briens, Hahn, Wilde and as well as a wide range of craft beers that are not gluten free.

The space

There are lots of nooks and crannies in this pub, so great if you just want to have a drink or snack in the bar area, a sit down meal or a function.

There is an outside beer garden that is dog friendly, with water bowls and tennis balls provided!

We visited mid week in low season and didn’t need to book but it is worth booking in busier periods to make sure you don’t miss out.

It is walkable from the tram and is around the corner from Quest apartments if you are looking to stay somewhere nearby.  As it is on the edge of the city, it is a reasonable walk from Rundle Mall (about 25 minutes) but if you have a car, there is free parking around the pub.

We will definitely return to ‘the DOB’ when in Adelaide. The food was great, the staff were friendly and it is a lovely pub.
