TWØBAYS Brewing Co. GF brewery, Dromana
TWØBAYS Brewing Co. is a great place for coeliacs to have a brewery experience with both the beer and the food being 100% gluten free! They have have just celebrated their first anniversary and also recently won bronze in RACV’s 2019 Victorian Tourism Awards.
TWØBAYS is located in an industrial area of Dromana on the Mornington Peninsula (so you unlikely to just stumble across it) but it is quite near the VicRoads office if you are familiar with the area.
The tap room
The brewing room has a good atmopshere and had a steady stream of customers on a cold spring day when we visited. There are tables and chairs as well as a couple of sofas if you really want to relax.
If it is a cold day, there is overhead heating but you still get quite a breeze if the ‘garage door’ is open, as it was for some of the time when we visited.
Please note that they only accept card payments (no cash) and dogs aren’t allowed in the tap room. There is a small amount of seating outside if you have your dog with you.
The beers
You can order a pint or if you are new to the brewery the tasting paddles are a great way to go to find your perfect brew. Two tasting paddles cost $42 and you get a sheet with a description of each beer.
The pale ale and IPA are both endorsed by Coeliac Australia and are the top rated gluten free beers on Untappd.
The favourite beers amongst our group were the IPA, the golden ale and the porter. Everyone said that you would not know that the beers were gluten free and apparently 80% of visitors to the brewery do not need to be drinking gluten free.
The darkest one is the porter and it was a full bodied porter that was ideal on a cold afternoon. The golden ale was ‘tasty’ and my husband described it as one you could drink all day but did say the IPA is the one he would take home.
A number of the beers have strong floral and citrus notes which my husband enjoyed but my friends found a little strong, particularly number 6. If you are not a beer drinker like me, there is also cider, wine and soft drinks available. You can find out more about the brewing process on their website.
The food
The menu is on clipboards at the counter and on the tables – just go to the counter to order. Our group had the hot salami, pesto and potato, and pear and prosciutto which were all delicious and again, you would not know that they were gluten free. The only downside was that there was no cutlery so it was a bit messy eating the pizza, particularly the one with the proscuitto and rocket.
There was also a beef pie available as a special, but I’m not sure that it came with anything (i.e. no chips or salad).
Where to buy
If you can’t visit the taproom, online orders are possible, and they are also stocked around Australia at various bottle shops, including Dan Murphy’s in Victoria and Queensland.
TWØBAYS Brewing Co. is a great spot to visit if you are in the Dromana area and you can also hire the taproom for a function.
