Microwave toastie maker by Morphy Richards
A microwave toasted sandwich maker? Your mind automatically wonders how this would work – won’t it be soggy?
This microwave toastie maker cooks a delicious toastie in less than five minutes without a grill or sandwich maker. You have to see it to believe it!
The Morphy Richards Mico microwave cookware products are fantastic if you have coeliac disease and need to avoid shared kitchen equipment or just need a convenient option while travelling.
They are new to Australia but have been out in the UK for some time. Also available is a potato and egg cooker.
I have only tried the Mico Toastie and the bread comes out perfectly crisp on the outside and the fillings warm and melted like a traditional toastie.
The only trick is getting the right sized bread as gluten free bread is often so small. In Australia, the Helga’s gluten free bread is a good size for the toastie maker. You need to butter the outside of the bread, add your fillings and then clip the two parts together and put in the microwave for under 5 minutes, flipping it half way through (don’t forget to use oven gloves). Next time I would do less than 5 minutes for a 1000W microwave.
Reading reviews, I found people have been using it for omelettes too. I tried this using two eggs and just pouring onto one side of the maker and cooking for 2.5 minutes. It did work and was fine with some toast but might be a bit rubbery on its own.
The only downside is the Toastie unit weighs just under 900g so it adds quite a bit of weight to your bag.
The Mico Toastie is dishwasher safe – you just need to dismantle the product before cleaning by popping the plates out of frame.
In Australia you can buy the Mico Toastie from The Good Guys for $49.95 and in the UK directly from Morphy Richards for £29.99
